New Digs

We just signed the lease on this HUGE house in Y-town. It is probably too much room for us, but in the end we couldn't pass up the price and location. It is on a quiet street, near a park. There are four bedrooms (two are pretty small), 2.5 baths, a breakfast room, and a sunroom. Plus the usual living room and dining. So we can each have an office and still have room for guests (hint, hint). We'll move in at the end of the month. The owners are still in it now, so these pictures show their furniture, etc.

Living room with working fireplace.

Sunroom. Off the living room. This will probably be an office for one of us.

Kitchen.

Breakfast room. Off the kitchen.

Gotta love those old built-ins. These are in the upstairs hallway.

A room upstairs. We'll probably use this as another office also.

Bathroom. Natch.

Master bedroom. Very large. Great light. I know you are eyeing those closets. Hands off.

To Hartford!

I had a show at Real Art Ways in Hartford, CT with these 2 artists - Sam McKinness and Corinne Beardsly. Everything went really well and the folks at Real Art Ways are super.

Some people look at my work.

Phoebe Augustine shows me some pictures she's taken.

Last Brunch of the RAiR Outdoor Club

With only a day to spare before we left town, an emergency brunch was called for the RAiR Outdoor Club. Very little hiking was accomplished (and by that I mean none) But some very tasty food was consumed. And of course, group photos were taken. This is what a year in Roswell will do to ordinary people.

David and Krista pose with wigs that look frighteningly like very ugly versions of their own hair.

Mimi and Sydney share a laugh about yogurt.

Oh, I ate too much!

Nick and Sarah admire...

the incredible stuffed animal dress.

Ahhh. Lemur.

Tinnie Mercantile

I had a show of my work at Tinnie Mercantile in Roswell shortly before we left. Even though I wasn't on the residency, RAiR was generous enough to give me use of a studio during our stay and I wanted to share the work I'd created in NM with Roswell. Brinkman, the owner of Tinnie, is a supporter of the arts and a member of the RAiR board, and he gladly let me hang my prints.

The Best Little Mexican Joint in Roswell: Mi Cabana

Despite being less than 3 hours from Old Mexico, Roswell, New Mexico has some of the worst Mexican Restaurants ever to refry a bean. As we tried more and more of these dives, we came to anticipate the dreaded puddles - shallow, greasy pools of over salted refried beans, rubbery cheddar cheese, flavorless green enchilada sauce and guacamole that was more mayo than avocado. NOT good.

That was, until we tried Mi Cabana - the best thing to happen to a Roswellian's palette since the Hatch Chili. I went there first with the staff of the Roswell Museum and Art Center, so they are to be credited with the recommendation. Since then, I've gone back several times with other RAiR residents. These photos represent our final visit.

One of the best things about Mi Cabana (My Cabin) is the hunting cabin themed decor. There is evidence of hunting: stuffed raccoons, deer heads and various other pelts and skins. There are paintings of the old west and photographs of Mexican and American movie stars. There is stained glass and small dioramas of rustic woodsy scenes. All of this is wrapped in a faux log cabin package.

My favorite is the Chicken Tacos. They are simple, but very tasty. With a little Pico De Gallo and salsa, they are just the right heat level to flavor ratio. I've also tried the Chicken Enchiladas, Lingua Torta (tongue sandwich - sounds better in Spanish, no?), and Beef Enchiladas all of which are very good.

Sarah gives Sidney a much-needed drink after she downs a whole bowl of Pico De Gallo.

Mimi asks, "What are you getting? Can we share?"

Although she was a big fan of and repeat customer for the Cheese Enchiladas with Green Sauce, Krista declared that she WOULD NOT leave New Mexico without trying the Cheese Enchiladas with RED Sauce. She says, "Knowing what I do now, I'll always choose green."

Always Take the Long Way Home

Thinking it would be a huge mistake to leave the southwest without visiting Pietown, NM, we decided to take the long way home (NM Route 60) and make the Pastry-Pilgrimage. It was worth it for just the photo opps.

This is the Pie-O-Neer Cafe, which was closed. Check out the "Stop" sign in the background. We really wanted to taste their pies, but their summer hours didn't jive with ours. So we settled for the Pie-A-Day Cafe, just down the road. The people there were nice, but their pies were so-so. Krista had Triple Berry (Blue, Rasp, Black) Pie and I had Creamy Pecan, both heated. The Triple Berry was much better. I think the Pecan had been sitting around for a while - not a whole lot of people drifting through Pietown this time of year.

Also along Route 60 is the Very Large Array - a series of huge radar dishes that act in concert as a radio telescope. In addition to making detailed maps of the cosmos, this site was also the background for a couple scenes in Contact starring Jodi Foster. The VLA is featured on the poster for the movie.

Phoenix/Tucson

In Tucson, we visited our friends Lee and Jenny. We also visited BioSphere 2, which was almost as nice as Lee and Jenny's home.

Inside BioSphere 2 we took a tour that was guided by an older gentleman who's delivery was similar to that of a Baptist Preacher. At the end of every sentence he made a little emphasis on the last consonant. Think of a mix between Robert Duvall in The Apostle and James Hetfield of Metallica.

BioSphere 2 is an interesting mix of cutting edge bio-technology and embarassing techno-flops. I mean, did they really thing they could fit the world's entire ecosystem inside a glass bubble in the middle of the desert? That said, it was all interesting and well worth a visit.

This is the Caribbean Sea.

Here are Lee and Jenny the day we went to In and Out Burger - the best fast food establishment ever. Here Lee attempts to taste a chocolate shake and a Half and Half shake simultaneously. We admire his bravery.

And on the 18th of June, we saw Tom Waits at the Orpheum theater in Phoenix. It was a great show. Here's the setlist:
